| The
Colorado River Rat High Adventure Award is offered by the Desert Pacific
Council in recognition of any canoe float trip on the Lower Colorado
River between Hoover Dam and Imperial Dam. The trip must cover at
least 20 miles in 2 or more consecutive days, with the overnight camp
at least 5 miles from the launching point and the take-out point,
with the exception of the Topock Gorge section.
River Segment
II of Trek Aid 101 outlines requirements and exceptions for the
Topock Gorge. It is strongly recommended that the Salty Rat (see
Trek Aid 101A) be earned by all participants before doing the River
Rat.

Award Requirements:
1. The canoe float trip must cover at least 20 miles of the Lower Colorado
River between Hoover Dam and Imperial Dam, and must be made in 2 or more
consecutive days, with an overnight camp at least 5 miles from the launching
point and/or five miles from the take-out point.
2. You must obtain a BSA Tour Permit
3. All food and equipment must be carried in the canoes. The only exception
to this rule is through the Topock Gorge, where gear can be car-shuttled
from Park Moabi to Lake Havasu Landing due to the camping restrictions
in the Topock Gorge area.
4. All participants will have previously completed Swimming and Canoeing
Merit Badges. Red Cross Fundamentals of Canoeing is an alternative to
the Canoeing Merit Badge and will serve to certify adults for the swimming
requirement.
5. PFD’s must be worn at all times while afloat. Note: Unit Leaders
must certify that all participants will wear and did wear PFD’s
at all times while afloat.
6. Demonstrate the Scouting Spirit by your actions and helpfulness during
the trip, complying with the General Requirements of pages 4 and 5 of
Trek Aid 100.
7. Fill out and submit the appropriate High Adventure Award form to the
Desert Pacific Council, BSA. List the names of participants on the back
of the form.
8. A powerboat is not to carry gear or food for the paddlers. The use
of a powerboat is not a requirement, but it is a safety consideration.
9. At least one adult Scouter (and preferably more) must have a current
High Adventure Leader Water Trek Training card.
