The Pacific Crest Trail Backpacking Award is offered by the Desert Pacific Council in recognition of specific backpacking trek requirements along the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail (PCT) as shown in the latest trail description or maps of the U.S. Forest Service. The Award also requires participation in a group project where each individual performs 4 hours of actual supervised trail construction, maintenance or repair during or within one month of the backpack.

Award Requirements:

1. Take an overnight backpack of 15 miles or 7 ½ hours scheduled backpack time in 2 consecutive days along the PCT, camping at least 2 hours from either end of the trail. Note: Mileage on access and feeder trails, former “temporary” sections where the permanent PCT has now been established, sections of the California Riding and Hiking Trail, and sections of the John Muir Trail is not counted in the aforementioned PCT mileage requirement.

2. Each person shall, as part of a group project, perform 4 hours of actual trail construction, maintenance, or repair during or within one month of the backpack under the direction of a Trail Foreman, Ranger or approved Trail Boss. Trail work must be approved in advance and shall be signed off as completed by the supervising Trail Foreman, Ranger or approved Trail Boss. Trail and campsite cleanup do not qualify and shall not be counted for this award.
3. All participants must comply with the General Requirements on pages 4 and 5 of Trek Aid #100, High Adventure Awards.
