The Lazy Rat High Adventure Award is offered by the Desert Pacific Council in recognition of any float trip on any river in a rubber raft or inner tube constructed raft.

Suggestions for raft construction can be found in Trek Aid 101, Canoe the Colorado River, or can be found in a variety of resource materials published by the Boy Scouts of America.

Award Requirements:

1. Plan and carry out a float trip on any river in a rubber raft or inner tube constructed raft (the Tom Sawyer variety). The trip must be a minimum of 20 miles on the river, with at least one overnight camp. Have the appropriate BSA Tour Permit and float plan on file.

2. All participants earning the award must transport themselves and all gear, including food, aboard the raft. Exception: the trip through Topock Gorge may be modified for this requirement, as gear may be car-shuttled from Park Moabi to Lake Havasu landing due to camping restrictions in the Topock Gorge area. A back-up motor boat is recommended for these trips for safety and temporary towing, as a raft can be subject to non-maneuverable conditions at times.

3. Have a BSA Tour Permit on file before departure.

4. All participants will have previously completed Swimming and Canoeing Merit Badges. Red Cross Fundamentals of Canoeing is an alternative to the Canoeing Merit Badge and will serve to certify adults for the swimming requirement.

5. PFD’s must be worn at all times while afloat. Note: Unit Leaders must certify that all participants will wear and did wear PFD’s at all times while afloat.

6. Demonstrate the Scouting Spirit by your actions and helpfulness during the trip, complying with the General Requirements of pages 4 and 5 of Trek Aid 100.

7. Fill out and submit the appropriate High Adventure Award form to the Desert Pacific Council, BSA. List the names of participants on the back of the form.

8. At least one adult Scouter (and preferably more) must have a current High Adventure Leader Water Trek Training card.

Note: It is strongly recommended that the Salty Rat (see Trek Aid 101A) be earned by all participants before doing the Lazy Rat.
