Requirements for the Camelback Medal: 1. The Camelback Medal is awarded for completion of 30 miles on the CR&HT, but the 30-mile requirement can be met by completing two 15-mile (2 day) backpacks done at different times, or one 30-mile backpack done in either one weekend as a Sierra Trek preparation (2 days), or as a Troop Outing (3 days). Backpack time is defined as the time actually spent hiking the primary trail, and does not include snack stops, fishing, meal stops, over-night camping, or similar types of stops, and requires that the overnight camp be at least 2 hours from the trail-head or pickup point. Fifteen consecutive hours of Backpack time is considered the equivalent of meeting the 30-mile requirement. If the 30 miles are to be hiked in one weekend (2 days), approval must be received in advance from the DPC High Adventure Team. 2. Each person shall, as part of a group project, complete 1 hour of conservation work to improve the trails, campsites, the general area, or Scout Camp. This conservation project may be completed either on the backpack or within one month before or after the backpack. The awards shall not be applied for until the completion of the conservation project, and shall not be presented to anyone who fails to complete the project. NOTE: Trail work, except clean up, must be authorized in advance by the Area Ranger, the Trail Foreman, or by the DPC High Adventure Team Trail Boss Chairman or his authorized representative. 3. Comply with all the General Requirements listed in Trek Aid #100 4. Over the years, much of the California Riding and Hiking Trail has fallen into disrepair, or has been turned over to private development and ownership. There are several recommended routes in Cuyamaca Rancho State Park, the Cleveland National Forest, Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, and Joshua Tree National Park. These routes are identified in Trek Aid 103. At least one adult leader who is HALT Certified must be present on the hike in order to qualify for the award. |
